Microsoft Corporation’s India arm has made a significant real estate purchase in Pune’s Hinjawadi area, acquiring a 16.4-acre land parcel for Rs 520 crore. This tech-heavy region is home to the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park, making it a prime location for technology companies. The transaction details were sourced from documents accessed by Square Yards, identifying Indo Global Infotech City LLP as the seller.
Microsoft’s Growing Presence in Pune
This is Microsoft India’s second substantial land acquisition in Pune. In 2022, the company purchased a 25-acre plot for Rs 328 crore in Pimpri-Chinchwad, another technology-driven suburb of Pune. The Pimpri-Chinchwad plot is currently being developed into a data centre, showcasing Microsoft’s commitment to expanding its infrastructure footprint in the region. The Hinjawadi land acquisition further reinforces Pune’s strategic importance to Microsoft’s India operations.
Moneycontrol has approached Microsoft for a statement on its specific plans for the newly acquired Hinjawadi land parcel. The company’s move is being closely watched, as it could potentially lead to more data centres or development facilities.
Hinjawadi: Pune’s IT Hub
Hinjawadi, situated in western Pune, is one of India’s leading technology zones, housing numerous IT companies, global capability centres, and manufacturing facilities. As the home of the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park, the area has become a magnet for major corporations seeking a base for their operations in India.
Microsoft’s investment in Hinjawadi reflects the region’s growing significance as a technology hub, not only for Pune but for India as a whole.
Microsoft’s Broader Expansion in India
In addition to the Pune purchases, Microsoft India has been ramping up its presence in other parts of the country. Earlier this year, the company acquired a 48-acre land parcel in Hyderabad for Rs 267 crore, aimed at expanding its data centre infrastructure. Microsoft, along with other tech giants like Google and Amazon Web Services, is positioning itself as a key player in India’s future data localisation efforts, driven by the establishment of more data centres across the country.
Currently, Microsoft employs around 23,000 people in its development centres located in Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Noida, highlighting its long-standing commitment to India’s tech ecosystem.
