Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, emphasized that the redevelopment of Dharavi, one of the world’s largest slum clusters, is about restoring dignity to over a million residents. Speaking at an event at Jai Hind College in Mumbai, Adani highlighted that the project goes beyond urban renewal and is focused on transforming the lives of Dharavi’s residents. “Dharavi is not just about urban renewal. It is about restoring dignity to over one million residents of our country. It is about the possibilities when you dare to dream big and act with purpose,” Adani said.

Adani Group’s Role in the Dharavi Redevelopment

The Dharavi Redevelopment Project is being spearheaded by a special purpose vehicle (SPV), Dharavi Redevelopment Project Pvt Ltd, in which the Adani Group holds an 80 percent stake, while the government of Maharashtra retains the remaining 20 percent. The project is intended to transform Dharavi into a modern and sustainable urban area, providing better living conditions for its residents.

Surveys for the redevelopment are already in progress, with about 10,000 structures surveyed as of now. The entire survey is expected to be completed by March 2025, marking a significant milestone in this ambitious urban renewal project.

Inclusive Housing for Dharavi Residents

One of the unique aspects of the project, as highlighted by Adani, is the commitment to providing housing to all residents, regardless of their eligibility status. Those residents who were deemed ineligible—those who moved to Dharavi after 2011—will still receive housing in other parts of Mumbai through a rental housing scheme, with an option to purchase at a later stage. This inclusive approach aims to ensure that every resident benefits from the redevelopment.

Challenges in Land Acquisition

However, the project faces challenges in acquiring enough land to house ineligible residents. SVR Srinivas, CEO of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project, stated that around 500-600 acres of land are required. While 27 acres have been secured from Indian Railways, the team is working on acquiring more land, including from defunct salt pans owned by the union government, to fulfill the housing requirements.

Conclusion

The Dharavi redevelopment project continues to attract attention due to its scale, ambition, and the social impact it promises to deliver. As Maharashtra gears up for its upcoming elections, the project has also become a significant part of the political discourse, reflecting its importance in the state’s urban planning and development agenda.
